First Sunday Acts of Defiance
November of 2006
After much prayer and thought I have come to the conclusion that protests against the war are not enough. Acts of Defiance are now called for. I believe that these Acts must be peaceful and a personal sacrifice.
Because the War is about control of energy resources and we in the western world are by far the biggest consumers of economic products and services, these Acts of Defiance must impact the economy.
On the First Sunday of every month I will not participate in any economic activity. I selected Sunday because this day has been traditionally a day of Worship and Rest. Sunday has become just another day to consume objects and forces others to work to serve this mindless consumerism.
I will not: Work, go shopping, buy gas, read email, look at TV, pay to attend a sporting event, take part in political campaigns, do home work for school, clean the house or other chores, talk on the phone, run a lawn mower, leaf blower or snow blower…
I will: Go to Church, take a walk, ride a bike, visit a neighbor, invite a neighbor over for a cup of coffee, prepare a Sunday dinner, read, play a game with my children, fix some thing that is broken, do some gardening, rake leaves, shovel snow…
Just what is it about our “way of life” that we want our sons and daughters fighting and dying for?
I understand that some of us must work so we can pick an alternative day. Those of us that observe Saturday as a day of Faith should do so then. The thing is our economic activity is so closely watched, any down tick will be noticed by afternoon and be in the Wall Street Journal by Tuesday.
Remember the words of our President after the 9/11 attacks: “…don’t let this stop you from going to the Mall…”
I’m emailing using “blind carbon copy” to many on my email list. If you find any value in these “First Sunday Acts of Defiance”, add some ideas of your own and forward it on.
Peace

I think we need to look to the work of Paul Hanly Furfey for some of the best ways in which to approach peace.
Good luck to you.
