Carry on Luggage

I don't fly very often these days, thank God. But when my son finished boot camp we flew down there for his graduation. I'm so proud of him! I flew on Delta Airlines out of Detroit and everything went off with out a hitch. The plane was crowded and the worst part of the flight was the carry-on luggage; what a hassle!

People had various sizes of luggage with pull-up handles and wheels. These bags are stuffed to max and must weigh sixty or seventy pounds! Little old laddies were trying to hoist the bags into the overhead compartments and after a few unsuccessful attempts somebody would put their bags down or get back out of their seats and stuff and shove the bag in. A few minutes later the bag would have to be re-arranged and re-stuffed to make room for another bag.

I also wonder how this effects the handling of the airplane. Would it be better to have all that weight lower in the plane? Wouldn't it be safer during turbulence if all that luggage couldn't fall out and fly around the cabin?

But maybe we could design the seats to accept a standard sized wheeled bag with a pull-up handle.
The bag would become an integral part of the seat
The bag would be wheeled and with a pull-up handle
The bag would would fit precisely in the space under the seat and
the horizontal cushion would lock down on top of the bag
The bag would be built strong enough to carry the weight of the person.
The top of the bag would be cushioned too
The handle would fit into a recess in the seat back
The back of the bag would be angled for foot room for the passenger behind

The advantages would be
Faster boarding and de-boarding
Lower center of gravity
Increased safety
The overhead compartments could still be used for smaller and lighter soft bags
of a precise size.

The disadvantages would be
The bags would have to be made strong enough with enough precision to lock
into place and carry some of the weight of the passenger.
The horizontal seat portion on plane would have to carry some of the passenger's weight too.
