Trauma in a Shoebox

I think everybody has sad and traumatic events happen in their lives. But I’ve come to understand that these things should be like the stuff you keep in a shoebox in your closet or under your sweaters in a drawer. These things really happened in the past; there is no way around that but if you leave them laying around the living room tripping over them they will always slow you down. And you will be embarrassed where visitors can see them on the dinning room table.

But excessive drugs and alcohol are like when all sorts of people come into your house that you don’t know for a party; they go into your closet, open your shoe boxes and scatter your stuff all over; people laughing and pointing; people walking on your stuff an breaking them in to hundreds of pieces that can not be repaired. (or friends that hack your fb!)

But keeping them in a shoebox you can take them out when YOU want to and you can show them to trusted friends then put them back in the box and back on the shelf. You can deal with it on YOUR terms.
